Seaside Holidays in the 50s
Year 3 enjoyed meeting Mrs Ann Golightly who came into class to share some of her memories about ‘Seaside’ holidays and daytrips in the 1950s. The class are currently developing their historical understanding of the concept of CHANGE and they are doing this by finding out about holidays before/after and during the 1950s. They are using different sources of evidence and were able to ask the visitor lots of questions about the past. Mrs Golightly brought a PowerPoint of slides and shared some pictures of her family at the local beaches, plus her favourite place, Blackpool! The children really enjoyed the afternoon and rounded it off with a sing-song and a Punch and Judy show.
Class 3: Ukulele Lessons
On Tuesday, Class 3 were excited to have a lesson with music teacher, Mrs Coulls who introduced them to the ukulele. First, they listened to the Ukulele Orchestra of GB playing a piece of music. Next, they learned all the parts of the ukulele e.g. fret, neck etc plus the names of the 4 strings: GCEA. They had a good way to remember the names of the strings by saying: Go Crazy Every Afternoon!
The children strummed and plucked the strings and made very good progress in their first lesson because they were very good listeners. Well done Class 3!
On Tuesday children from Years 3 to 6 took part in tree planting at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club. We were given this opportunity by Oases North East in recognition of the school’s success in being awarded the Platinum Green Trees Award last year. Before Christmas, KS1 classes were visited by Grace Johnson from Oases to plant seeds which will grow into trees of the future.
Special well done to the children from Year 3 and 4 who took part in the Football League over the past few weeks. Some of the children had never played football before, but were so proud to represent St Anne’s in the competition. We are all so very proud of you and look forward to future competitions!
A special thank you to Mr Hodgson and Mrs Tonge for taking the team to King James each week and for their coaching skills.
Class 3 Trip to St Anne’s CE Church, Bishop Auckland.
On Wednesday, Class 3 went for a visit to St Anne’s CE Church in the Market Square. They were welcomed by Reverend Matt and Alison who helped them to learn more about the symbols in the Christian church. They started the session with some worship and then went on a ‘Cross Hunt’ to see how many crosses they could find around the church- some people found over 60 crosses!
Next, they taught us about the other objects we see in a Christian church like the lectern, the paschal candle, the altar, the stained glass windows, the font and even the Bishop’s throne.
Reverend Matt explained why different colours are used at certain times of the church’s year and he showed the different vestments of green, red, purple and white. The children’s RE lessons were brought to life by their visit to church and they were a credit to the school.
Well done Class 3!
Bowes Museum Trip
Class 3 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Bowes Museum on Tuesday. They took part in a Stone Age to Iron Age workshop and were able to handle artefacts from long ago, including a bronze axe which was thousands of years old! The children learnt about and handled early Stone Age tools like a hammer stone, tools made from bone and antlers, plus a flint scraper and arrowhead. They saw iron jewellery and a spearhead.
Later, the class enjoyed a craft session where they created their own clay pot based on the style of the pottery brought by ‘The Beaker’ people during the Neolithic/Bronze Age. The children practised different skills and used a range of tools to create patterns on their very own pot.
The day was rounded off with a trip to the gift shop and a great day was had by all!
